Spyware
According to Wikipedia, spyware is defined as "a broad category of malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the informed consent of that machine's owner or legitimate user" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware), usually to the benefit of a third party. Common spyware activities include running pop-ups, acquiring personal information (including credit card numbers), or monitoring your Web-surfing activities. Spyware can also redirect your web browser to specific sites, often those of advertisers.
Common (freeware or shareware) anti-spyware applications include Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot's Search and Destroy. Many commercial anti-virus software applications now include some type of anti-spyware protection. Once installed, anti-spyware applications should be regularly updated for maximum benefit.
Recommendation
ITS suggests that all students install anti-spyware software in order to block spyware that may be lurking on or that may try to install on their computers. Clean Access (CCA) will recommend that you have anti-spyware software on your computer, but will not deny you access to network services if you choose not to do so.
