Microsoft Windows update
Microsoft's critical updates are available for Windows-based computers. Installing and keeping up-to-date operating system patches on all network-connected computers is an essential part of the ITS efforts to maintain a secure and stable networking environment. To check if you have all crtical updates installed and to configure your computer to automatically update future patches, (1) visit http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us or (2) open Internet Explorer, click Tools...Windows Update on the menu.
You may be prompted to install Windows Update. If so, click Install on the security warning and then Install Now on the Windows Update Software page:

The fastest way to install Windows Update is to use the Express install. Click Express and then click Download and Install Now.
In order to complete the installation, you will need to click the I Accept button on the End User License Agreement (EULA) page.
When the updates have been successfully installed, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Make sure you have saved anything you are working on and that all running programs are closed before clicking Restart Now.
When your machine has rebooted, return to the Windows Update page to download any remaining updates. Repeat the above steps until all updates have been found. At this point you should be prompted to install the updates.
You'll see a list of updates being installed (remember to accept the EULA, if prompted again).

One final reboot should do it (remember to close all currently running program, saving any work in progress). You should also enable your automatic updates. Click here for instructions.
